When you think Valentine’s Day do you think roses, chocolates, and long romantic dinners? Book lovers fear not you too can have a decadent day that is all about books! Here are some fun ways to add that bookish twist to your Valentine’s Day.

Blind Date with A Book

This concept is not a new one but rather a classic way to celebrate the day. The idea is that you are “paired” up with a book that is either a perfect fit, outside your comfort zone, or just a complete surprise.

This is a tradition you can do alone or with almost anyone in your life. You and your partner can pick out books for each other and exchange wrapped presents on Valentine’s Day. Then snuggle up together on the couch with a bottle of wine and start reading!

Or you can get together for a Galentine’s Day with your friends and exchange wrapped books. You could even do it Yankee Swap style and everyone brings a wrapped book and you pick numbers. Then you each take turns unwrapping the book. The next number can steal your book or open a wrapped one. Giving a book gift

Almost every local library runs a blind date with a book event. Typically you can find it at any point in the month of February. Go to the front desk and ask it they run this program. If not maybe you can request they do one. This could start a whole new tradition in your town.

This is a fun tradition to start with your kids too. Give them a book you think they will love or a book that you loved when you were their age.

Read Books Together

Who says Valentine’s Day has to only be one day long? Pick a book you and your partner would both enjoy and read it leading up to Valentine’s Day. Then go out to dinner and discuss the book. A couple of recommendations for books would be

In Love and War book cover

In Love and War – A true story of Jim Stockdale a Vietnam War POW that was held captive for 8 years. This book is written by both Jim Stockdale and his wife Sybil Stockdale and tells the story of their relationship leading up to the war and the separate agonies they both endured for each other during those 8 years. The book explores their love and commitment to each other during their time apart.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow book cover

Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow – The story of a lifelong friendship, with a will they/won’t they trope, set against the backdrop of video game design. A story that will make both of you laugh and cry.

Or do a book and a movie. Go see a movie based on a book on Valentine’s Day and then both read the book. You can compare the movie and book on your next date!

Bookstore Date

If you are flying solo take yourself on a date to your local bookstore. Buy yourself a guilty pleasure book – something you’ve always wanted, or something trashy that you might not normally read. Or even just pick a book based on how much you love the cover. Then treat yourself to dessert and a coffee either at the bookstore or a nearby cafe. Sit back, read, and enjoy.
