Talk about fun! Empire of Shadows was truly a light, action-packed read. Perfect for summer. The first in the Raiders of the Arcana series. We follow Ellie Mallory, a headstrong Victorian woman who has always dreamed of being an archeologist but comes up against every gender barrier there is. After getting fired from her job, accidentally stealing an historic relic, and escaping the clutches of a nefarious criminal, she finds herself alone in the British Honduras. Enter Adam Bates, a local explorer and “incredibly chiseled” surveyor. The two get wrapped up in a race to find a lost city. This book is often compared to the movies Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Mummy, and I couldn’t agree more. This is not high literature. It is meant to be ridiculous, funny, and with a splash of romance. I literally finished the last page and immediately ordered book 2, Tomb of the Sun King. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes their heroines spunky and can suspend their disbelief in order to just have a rollicking good time.
